After announcing Micromax as its latest hardware partner, Microsoft has finally introduced its much talked about Cortana service as a part of the Windows Phone 8.1 update. The service essentially is a mashup of Apple’s Siri and Google Now-like voice assistant, which understands voice as well as text instructions, gives voice-assistance and help in a number of operations on the software. The Redmond-based company has launched the service as a beta and added that they are “training the service.” It will be available on Windows
Phone 8.1 as a beta and will initially work in the US only.
Cortana is powered by Bing and is deeply integrated with the search engine. It can save personal information including passwords, calendar data, contacts, location, and browsing history in the Cortana Notebook, which is its own note taking app. Similar features have earlier been seen on the Google Now service. Cortana can as well use this information in offering better search results from Bing by personalizing the search experience. The voice assistant can save passwords for later, can give personalized suggestions, can give personalized recommendations, as well as can also work with third-party apps. It can also pick up information like your upcoming flight details from your email, if you grant access to your mailbox.
